EAS and people counters

Print

Electronic article surveillance (EAS) is a technological method for preventing shoplifting from retail stores, pilferage of books from libraries or removal of properties from office buildings. Special tags are fixed to merchandise or books. These tags are removed or deactivated by the clerks when the item is properly bought or checked out. At the exits of the store, a detection system sounds an alarm or otherwise alerts the staff when it senses active tags. EAS systems provide a good deterrent against casual theft. The occasional shoplifter, not being familiar with these systems and their mode of operation, will either get caught by them, or will refrain from stealing.

A people counter is a device used to measure the number and direction of people traversing a certain entrance. The device is often used at the entrance of a building or store so that the total number of visitors can be recorded. There are various reasons for counting people. The use of people counting systems in the retail environment is necessary to calculate the conversion rate, i.e. the percentage of a store's visitors and visitors who makes purchases. This is the key performance indicator of a store's performance and is superior to traditional methods, which only take into account sales data. Knowing when and where people move the most is also significant in marketing and planning campaigns.
